Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is supplied by large industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety measures must be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post must not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not allow items like for example lighters or matches to be utilized while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging method could release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
