Forklifts or lift trucks are powered industrial trucks that are typically used in the moving and lifting of materials for different operations. These kinds of machinery are commonly utilized within the construction, mining, warehousing, and dockside operations.

The forklift can be called by a lot of different names, depending on their uses. Some different examples of these names include: fork trucks, trailer loaders, lift trucks and stacker trucks. These machines are used all around the world, mainly within the manufacturing and warehousing industry.

The very first forklifts made their debut during the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when they were used as part of the building of the 1906 Pennsylvania railroad. During that time, platform trucks were introduced in order to help in moving products. These first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity during WWI when extreme labor shortages happened due to all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts really arrived on the market to stay.

There are essentially 2 main types of forklift: those dealing with heavy loads and those which could handle light loads. The light units comprise: side loaders, towing tractors, walkie starters and hand pallet trucks. These machinery are built for handling lighter cargo and they are not suitable for extremely heavy loads. The specific load capacity of the equipment is posted in the owner's handbook and on the machine itself. A few examples of the big truck types include: truck mounted forklifts, telescopic handlers and walkie order picking trucks.

There are a range of different units of forklifts available and a lot of different variations of load and capacity. Most of the time in warehouse applications, the lighter models is used. Bigger units are normally seen in the shipping business. Certain units have a tilting mast to make the load bend so as to counteract any slipping.

Most of units have rear steering wheels. This design aspect is to increase the ease in how the machine is capable of being maneuvered. Moreover, this steering manner comes in really helpful when operating around corners. These machines can be unstable due to their changing centers of gravity. It is a good idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Specialized forklifts are yet another kind. These equipment include explosion proof trucks and articulated counterbalance trucks. The explosion proof trucks are used in factories and settings which deal with combustible supplies.
